The CEO speaks: looking ahead

Prevalent socio-economic indices point to an ever increasing demand for energy in emerging economies. This presents an opportunity for UBI to play a role in the development of West Africa.

Man's obsession with predicting the future is well documented in the annals of history. From the ancient Mayan and Aztec tribes of South America to the tribes of West Africa, human beings have always tried to decipher the future — it helps planning, preparation and strategising. It is therefore important for UBI to think on what the future holds for the energy industry.

As governments in emerging economies continue to spend on infrastructural development and industrialisation, demand for energy keeps rising. The world has witnessed how visionary leaders of the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar used income from oil to transform their countries into tourism, technological and sports hubs. The West African region is set for a similar story.

At UBI, we predict a future where Ghana becomes a major economic capital of Africa, known for its immense contributions to the energy industry and tourism. We envision UBI playing a key role in bringing about this transformation. Our values — integrity, commitment, teamwork, discipline and fun — will serve as our guide and driving force.

How the world discovered energy

Prehistory

Discovery of fire

One of the earliest sources of energy. Archaeological discoveries show that people have used fire for millennia for illumination, warmth and cooking — a major source of light and thermal energy.

1838

Discovery of solar power

Edmond Becquerel observed materials turning light into energy. In 1876 William Adams wrote “A Substitute for Fuel in Tropical Countries”, and with Richard Day used mirrors to power a 2.5 hp steam engine — the Power Tower concept still in use today.

1850s

Discovery of petroleum

Ignacy Łukasiewicz invented kerosene distillation and the first commercial oil well was drilled in Poland in 1853. Yet asphalt built the walls of Babylon, and oil came from bamboo-drilled wells in China in 347 AD.
